Rare Blue Diamond Sets World Record

A fancy deep-blue diamond weighing 5.30 carats set a $1.8 million per carat world record at Bonhams Fine Jewelry sale in London last week. The selling price of approximately $7.3 million was more than five times its pre-sale estimate.

The antique cut cushion shaped blue beauty is mounted in a Trombino ring surrounded by pavé-set round brilliant cut and baguette cut white diamonds approximately 2.00 carats total. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has graded the diamond as fancy deep blue, natural colour and VS2 clarity.

“Blue diamonds, especially those over 5 carats, are extremely rare to see on the market and continue to be highly sought after,” said Jean Ghika, director of Bonhams jewelry department for Europe.

The term ‘fancy’ describes the Type IIb diamond’s unique shade of blue which stems from traces of Boron elements. Other historic blue diamonds which exhibit similar characteristics include the Hope diamond, the Wittelsbach-Graff diamond and the Tereschenko diamond. All are believed to have originated from the Golconda mines which have produced white diamonds and fancy color diamonds with the highest degree of brilliance.

The Princie Diamond to Auction

On April 16th, the largest fancy intense pink Golconda diamond ever offered at auction will be highlighted at Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale in New York.

The Princie Diamond, a 34.65 carat cushion cut gem has origins dating back to the royal family of Hyderabad, rulers of one of the most affluent provinces of the Mughal Empire. Its unique name was initially bestowed in Paris where it was christened as “Princie” honoring the young Prince of Baroda.

“One of the largest and finest pink diamonds in the world, The Princie Diamond carries a fabulous provenance, which brings together the legendary names of Golconda, Nizam of Hyderabad, and the Maharani Sita Devi of Baroda.“, said François Curiel, Chairman of Christie’s Jewelry Department. “This rich history, combined with its rare pink hue, conveys a special charm, which will speak to all collectors in the world seeking the best of the best in gemstones.”, he added.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has graded the stone as fancy intense pink, natural color, VS2 clarity and is said to be a type IIA diamond.  This marks the second time in 50 years the remarkable stone has appeared at auction, and estimates expect it to fetch $30 to $40 million. The Princie Diamond is among numerous renowned diamonds excavated from the Golconda mines that have broken world records at auction in recent years. Others include the Archduke Joeseph Diamond, the Wittelsbach Diamond and the Beau Sancy Diamond.

101 Carat Flawless Diamond Goes to Auction

The world’s largest D color flawless diamond ever offered at auction is scheduled to go under the hammer at Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale in Geneva on May 15th.  The 101.73 carat pear shaped marvel, being offered for the first time, has pre-sale estimates in the $20 million range.

“A perfect diamond is the result of the skill and vision of a master cutter who is able to uncover beauty from a rough gem.” said Rahul Kadakia, head of jewelry for Christie’s Switzerland and Americas. “This diamond is in its scale, quality and rarity one of the most beautiful white diamonds Christie’s has ever had the honor of offering for sale,” he added.

Discovered at the Jwaneng Mine in Botswana, the diamond was carved from a 236 carat rough and took nearly 2 years to polish. The Gemological Institute of America has given the stone the highest grades in both color and clarity and according to Chrisitie’s it has been “sculpted like a work of art”. The chemically pure type IIA gem radiates a rare inner brilliance unique to fewer than 2 percent of the world’s diamonds.

The stone is set to join the ranks of some of the world’s most famous diamonds and the buyer will have the privilege of initiating its legacy with a name.

Over the past few years fine gemstones have risen in demand at auction. In November 2012, the internally flawless and colorless 76 carat Archduke Joseph Diamond sold for a world breaking record of $21.5 million.
