Elizabeth Taylor’s Jewelry Fetches Record $115 Million

On Tuesday night, Christie’s first auction for the ‘The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor,’ fetched over $115 million – setting a new world record for the most valuable private jewelry collection ever sold at auction. All 80 jewels sold with 24 realizing more than $1 million and 6 jewels realizing more than $5 million.

“It’s one of the most extraordinary auctions that Christie’s has ever had and a testament to the affection for Elizabeth Taylor worldwide,” said Marc Porter, chairman and president of Christie’s Americas.

The top sale of the evening was for La Pérégrina (The Legendary Pearl), a 16th century pearl once part of the crown jewels of Spain. A gift to Taylor from Richard Burton in 1969, the piece was purchased by an anonymous buyer for $11.8 million surpassing the pre-sale high estimate of $3 million. The prior world record for a pearl jewel was set in 2007 at Christie’s auction house in New York City with the sale of The Baroda Pearls for $7,096,000.

Among other high profile items was ‘The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond‘, formerly known as The Krupp, the rectangular cut 33.19 carat D-Color diamond sold for $8,818,500 to a private Asian buyer, surpassing pre-sale estimates of $2,500,000 – $3,500,000.

The Taj Mahal diamond set on a gold and ruby chain sold to an anonymous buyer for $8.8 million, vastly surpassing a pre-sale high of $500,000 and simultaneously setting a new world record for an Indian jewel.

A diamond bracelet given to the film star by close friend Michael Jackson sold for $194,500.

More pieces from the late actress’s estate will go to auction later this week, with 189 items to go today and an online-only sale of some items running until Saturday. In February 2012, Taylor’s collection of Impressionist and Modernist art will go on sale in London.

As a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor’s life-long humanitarian causes, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.

Emmys 2011 Jewelry Winners

Going big and going red were the top two jewelry and fashion themes at Sunday’s 63rd Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards. Stacked bracelets, bold jewels and antique style pieces were some of the popular trends we saw last year. This year followed suit. However, tear drop shaped dangle earrings and colorful right hand rings clearly became the newest desirable jewelry accessories for Fall 2011. We noticed a growing trend of celebrities accessorizing solid pallet ensembles with an array of white and black diamonds or color gemstones in warm tones. With red being the statement color this season, there certainly wasn’t any shortage of rubies or sapphires and semi-precious stones of this hue on the red carpet.

Here are our Emmys 2011 jewelry winners below along with some suggestions on how to grab similarly designed sparkle for a steal!

Gwyneth Paltrow arguably wore the most interesting attire of the evening.  The 38-year-old actress, who picked up an award for her role as Holly Holiday on Glee, accessorized a sheer Pucci dress with a 50 carat diamond platinum wide bracelet, a 50 carat black diamond and black rhodium link bracelet, a 5 carat diamond and black onyx platinum right hand ring (not pictured) and a pair of emerald cut black diamond platinum dangle earrings.

Sparkle for a Steal: Emerald cuts aren’t just for emeralds. This 18k white gold right hand ring features one emerald cut blue topaz weighing 3 carats total surrounded by 72 round brilliant cut white diamonds weighing .39 carat total.

Sophia Vergara never disappoints in the fashion or jewelry department. The 39-year-old actress and Modern Family star looked gorgeous as ever in a custom Vera Wang coral one-shouldered crepe gown accessorized with an elaborate set of diamond and Colombian emerald yellow gold earrings. She wore the earrings, which feature over 100 carats of Colombian emeralds and over 60 carats of white diamonds, with an interesting 6 carat diamond and emerald dangle pinky ring and a bold diamond yellow gold cuff.

Sparkle for a Steal: For big and lacy look we recommend these diamond and peridot 18k rose gold dangle earrings featuring 2 honeycomb pear cut peridot stones weighing 4.42 carats total and 314 round brilliant cut white diamonds weighing 1.37 carats total.

Anna Torv used a large pair of diamond and ruby dangle earrings featuring over 80 carats of carved rubies to add a strong pop of color against a black Vera Wang gown.

Sparkle for a Steal: If you’re looking to go big and red in one fell swoop, we recommend these exquisite diamond and rust agate 14k yellow gold drop earrings at an excellent price point.

Heidi Klum has long been a fan of working bold and unique statement jewelry pieces with her wardrobe. The 38-year-old model accessorized her one of kind strapless Christian Siriano dress with a pair of fire opal, amethyst, yellow, white and brown floral cluster earrings and a spectacular matching floral leaf ring.

Sparkle for a Steal: Floral jewelry works for fall so long as it consists of dark metals or warm hued stones. This 14k rose gold and black rhodium right hand ring features 99 round cut pink sapphires weighing 1.94 carats total.

Jewelry Fashion Week 2012 Trends

Get a sneak peak into  fine jewelry fashion trends coming in 2012. In the video above, correspondents cover this year’s JCK Las Vegas event, the largest jewelry trade show of the year.  Large statement bangles and cuff bracelets seemed to have a prominent place in every designer’s collection while bold colors still remain a top jewelry drawer staple. Some of the most inspiring Platinum Innovation Award winning pieces included an antique style floral fashion ring, a platinum vintage diamond engagement ring with a modern twist featuring two halos around a round center stone and a men’s platinum and diamond wedding band.

It’s always encouraging to see any organization give back to their local or global community. Le Vian hosted Jewelers for Children fundraiser where $50 would be donated for every person that attended the event promising to donate a minimum of $115,000. This charity benefits children whose lives have been affected by illness, abuse, or neglect.  Simon G. who hosts an annual Summer Soiree coinciding with JCK Las Vegas worked hard in promoting and gathering celebrities to raise awareness for Generosity Water, a charity that helps bring clean drinking water to impoverished countries around the world.

Royal Wedding Jewelry: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

Congratulations to the newly wed Royal Couple! The Royal Wedding ceremony was held 6 a.m. EST this morning at Westminister Abbey where Prince William and Kate Middleton exchanged vows after nearly a decade of courtship. With all the anticipation over her nuptial attire, the now ennobled Duchess of Cambridge looked dazzling by all accounts. Kate managed to harmoniously balance royal tradition with her own sense of modern style. Here’s an overview of her elegant ensemble including something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue:

Something Old – Kate’s spectacular ivory white Alexander McQueen gown was designed by creative director Sarah Burton. Middleton worked closely with Burton in formulating the design of her dress which combines traditional fabrics and lacework with modern structure into the artistic vision that characterizes Alexander McQueen’s work. The Carrickmacross needlework in the beautiful lace sleeves and accents is a technique that dates back to the 1800s.

Something New – The royal bride’s custom made diamond earrings were a personal gift to her from her parents for her wedding day. The platinum earrings feature a pear-shaped diamond set drop oak leaf design and pave set acorn motif suspended in the center inspired by the new Middleton family coat of arms. The earrings were beautifully set off by her hair; a natural “demi-chignon” styled by James Pryce from Kate’s favorite salon, Richard Ward of Chelsea, London.

Something Borrowed – Loaned to Middleton by Queen Elizabeth, Kate’s delicate diamond halo tiara held together her veil and perfectly topped off her gown. The tiara was crafted in 1936 and purchased by the Duke of York for his wife(Elizabeth’s mother). Then Princess Elizabeth received the gift for her 18th birthday.

Something Blue – Perhaps the most famous piece bridal jewelry of all is Middleton’s diamond and blue sapphire engagement ring. Honoring his late mother Princess Diana, Prince William gave the exquisite ring to Middleton when he proposed in November 2010. The 18 carat ring features an oval shaped blue sapphire center worth approximately $300,000. Sapphires are actually rarer than diamonds, but less expensive because the demand is lower.
