28 Carat Flawless Diamond Sets New World Record at Auction

On April 8th, a 28.68 carat D color internally flawless round brilliant cut diamond of excellent cut, polish and symmetry set a new price per carat record at Sotheby’s Hong Kong sale of Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite. The stone sold to a private buyer for $6.9 million ($239,352 per carat), surpassing pre-sale estimates by nearly $1 million. Specifically, the diamond set a new record price for a D color flawless diamond sold at auction.

Other highlights included a pair of diamond pendant earrings weighing 8 carats which sold for $2.7 million, a 21.54 carat diamond mounted in an 18k white gold setting which sold for $2.7 million and a 19.54 carat cushion shaped Colombian emerald and diamond ring which sold for $1.9 million. While most of the highly anticipated lots were diamond pieces, jadeite, emerald, pearl and sapphire jewels also had a strong showing.

In total, the Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite sale garnered $61.4 million. The top prices paid indicate a continually rising demand for the highest quality diamonds and gemstones.
